Medium Well prepares website for 'Oprah Effect'
A major NYC fashion manufacturer came to Medium Well to help with the upcoming potential mention
of their product on the Oprah Winfrey Show. The producers of the show needed to be assured that
this manufacturer's site could handle the inevitable spike in website traffic. Also, the produce
to be mentioned needed to be available for sale on the site.
Time was running short. Medium Well immediately assessed that a new site would be the best
solution to the problem. In two short weeks, MW moved the site to a dedicated server,
redesigned the layout and navigation for ease of use, and optimized the site with static
urls so as to reduce the load on the server. This made browsing very fast and reduced the
risk that the server and website would crash.
As predicted, once the Oprah Winfrey show aired, traffic to the site spiked with hundreds of
simultaneous unique visitors. The site was able to handle this load and never went down, despite
repeated airings of the show. Sales also showed a huge increase, as most visitors came to the
site to find the product that Oprah Winfrey had specifically mentioned.
